When selecting a coffee table for a space, my first consideration is how is this piece going to function in the room? Will it be used for drinks, magazines or accessories; are there small children in the home who will be playing around it or people who will like to put their feet up? Who is using it and how is a key question that may guide the type of coffee table that you choose. The table you select should be approximately level with your sofa.
My next step is to determine if the piece is going to be a supporting piece or be the focal point itself. If it is a square room, the coffee table can provide a central point around which to arrange a conversation area. Both square and circular tables work well in a square room. In a room that is rectangular or L-Shaped, the coffee table is frequently a supporting “character” in the room and would typically be rectangular. If the coffee table is visible from a foyer like the table in the picture below, it could serve both purposes.

Balance or visual weight is also very important. In the before photo to the right, you can see that the small coffee table is not to scale with the other furniture pieces in the room. I was using large bookcases on each side of the fireplace to create a focal wall, so I needed a coffee table that would be in proportion and balance the other furniture.
As you can see below, I selected a teak, driftwood table with a glass top to provide balance and add extra interest to the room. I also love the natural movement this organic piece adds.
In this space, the coffee table also functions as a focal point from the vantage point of the foyer and draws your eye into the living room.

The color, shape and style of the table should also reflect its role in the room and be consistent with the style you are creating. If you are designing a super modern space with lots of bold color, find a coffee table that is more “airy” like a wire-framed table, glass or acrylic table. If your living room is traditional, consider a wood coffee table that is in proportion with the sofa and chairs. You are blending styles, get creative!

One of my favorite coffee tables right now is the tufted ottoman. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and fabrics that can coordinate with a multitude of styles and spaces AND if you must, you can put your feet on them!
